How Often Should You Detail Your Car in NYC?

Most NYC drivers do well with an interior detail every 3 to 6 months, protection on the paint every few months, and a full detail once or twice a year. Here is why.

What NYC does to a car

  • Winter road salt dulls paint, wheels and trim and gets into carpets.
  • Spring pollen and tree sap bake onto cars parked under trees.
  • Brake dust and road film build up with stop-and-go traffic.
  • Cars parked on the street stay outside through alternate-side parking days, rain and sun.

A simple schedule

  • Interior detail: every 3 to 6 months, sooner with kids, pets or daily commuting.
  • Exterior wash and wax protection: about every 3 months. Our Essential Exterior includes 3-month wax protection.
  • Full detail: once or twice a year, plus after winter to remove salt.
  • Ceramic coating: a one-time protection that lasts years, with regular gentle washing to keep it working.

Before and after winter

Salt is the biggest seasonal threat. A detail in late fall adds protection before the salt arrives, and one in spring removes what built up. Rinse salt off between details when you can.

How to tell it is time

  • Water no longer beads on the paint.
  • The paint feels rough after washing.
  • The interior smells stale or you can see stains.
  • Wheels have baked-on brake dust.
